FOOD CRISIS- THE STARVATION OF STUDENT THAT HAS LITTLE TO NO INCOME

A student might already have tough times nourishing but the food crisis makes things harder as the food prices are rising and the supply is decreasing. Student needs to make a smart decision for survival. While, other expenses go to transportation, daily necessities and study supplies. Notably, it impacts household as well as family budget their income to buy groceries as the groceries prices increases. Student food insecurity is detrimental to student academic performance. The mixture of little to no income and study stress contributes significantly to low CGPA, attendance student at classes and graduate-on-time rates.

Food insecure students will choose processed food over whole foods. This includes instant noodles, fast food and overconsumption of sugar as processed food is much cheaper and can be stretched over a month. Say a student's pocket money is around RM150 per month, that is RM5 per day. Instant noodle such as Indomie is RM4 pack that contain five individual packs. That says a lot about students' choice of instant noodles as it is very cheap, convenient and very easy to prepare. However, later in life, students will face consequences to their health such as cardiovascular disease, obesity or even worst, shortened lifespan

There are no other ways than a student needs to get a part-time job to support themselves. A student who works in Food and Beverages will have more food security as part of the employee benefit. Although universities and faculty occasionally offer food banks for students, there are so many universities that can help. Students are forced to self-sustain during college life which will help during their real life. Additionally, working after class is not sustainable in the long run as students will burn out in the end. As for the international students, it is a bit harder to sustain themselves financially as they will need to depend on parents' sponsorship or scholarship for their daily expenses.
