In an effort to enrich the cultural experiences of international mobility students, the PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA) organised a cultural discovery trip to Kuala Lumpur on April 16, 2025. This excursion presented an invaluable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the rich artistic heritage and traditional crafts of Malaysia.

The day commenced at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, where the group received a warm welcome from their guide, Mr. Faisal. He imparted captivating insights into Malaysia’s diverse craft traditions, which included batik, Sarawakian textiles, and traditional weaving techniques. A notable highlight of the visit was a hands-on session in anyaman (weaving), during which students engaged in the creation of intricate patterns that characterise this time-honoured craft. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and camaraderie as the group participated in a game of congkak, a traditional pastime that not only provided entertainment but also offered a glimpse into the social customs of the past.

The cultural journey continued with a visit to the Malaysia Tourism Centre, where the students were treated to an exhilarating showcase of traditional dance performances by local artists. This vibrant display of movement, music, and costumes vividly illustrated Malaysia’s multicultural spirit, leaving the students with a profound appreciation for the nation’s cultural diversity.

This cultural excursion transcended a mere sightseeing tour; it served as a bridge of understanding, encouraging international students to connect with local heritage and to carry these meaningful experiences with them well beyond their time at UPM.
