Exploring the Role of Artificial Education in English Education : A discussion between researchers from Jeonbuk National University and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

 

20 June 2023 – PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA), in collaboration with the Faculty of Educational Studies at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), recently welcomed a delegation of three distinguished researchers from the English Department of Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) on June 20, 2023.  The representatives from JBNU included Prof. Dr. Jai Young Park, Professor in the Department of English Education; Prof. Dr. Heechul Lee, Professor in the Department of English Education and Director of the Human Resources Development Center, as well as the President of the Linguistic Association of Korea; and Prof. Dr. Jaewoo Shim, Professor in the Department of English Education. Welcoming the researchers were representatives from the Faculty of Educational Studies, including the dean, deputy dean, and a senior lecturer from the Department of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and a representative from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology.

 

Several key topics were discussed during the discussion, such as the possibility of TESL students conducting part of their practicum at JBNU as part of a mobility program and to explore potential research project in utilizing the GhatGPT language models in English education. The discussion also touched on defining AI and clarifying the copyright implications to address some of the concerns in the integration of AI in education such as plagiarism. The meeting also delved into the importance of integrating AI in daily life and how it could assist in language learning. The discussion also discussed on the adjustments that need to be done in order to accurately assess student competency during the widespread usage of ChatGPT.

 

The session included a sharing of experiences and issues posed by the widespread use of AI, particularly concerning TESL students. Prospective research projects on AI and language learning were also discussed, highlighting the potential for collaboration between the institutions. Through this discussion, hopefully it will open the path for both institutions the institutions to enhance language learning experiences and equip both the educators and the students with the necessary skills to navigate this technology-driven future.
