The ASEAN European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET) is a network of universities, consisting of European and South-East Asian universities with the goal of promoting continuous internationalization in education and research. ASEA-UNINET was founded in 1994 by universities from Austria, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam to mark the Austrian-South-East Asian University Network.  The network today consists of more than 80 universities from 18 different countries.  Universiti Putra Malaysia is honoured to have been selected among the seven universities in Malaysia to join the network.

The 6-day programme, attended by various university representatives working in the international office or student affairs section, consisted of a symposium, discussions on research and academic matters, and mobility trends and its challenges. Attending on behalf of UPM and Malaysia is Ms. Fairuz Muchtar Bawaze’er, an officer from iPUTRA.  Ms. Fairuz presented on one of the topics discussed, ‘Main Obstacles of International Mobility & the Solutions’ together with Universitas Udayana, King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. Universitas Airlangga (UNIAR) was the second venue of the programme, and participants were given an overview on how the International office at UNIAIR manages their famous language centre, the AMERTA programme, their tailor-made programmes and also their summer programme. This sharing session was an eye-opener for many universities as they learnt about other universities.

Universitas Udayana was the last venue of this programme, with many interesting topics emphasized in the two sessions on Hospitality and Disaster Management Plan. Bali is not only well-known as the most popular island holiday destination in the world, but also has the best practice in disaster management plan due to its geographical location.

The programme enabled the participant universities to benefit from the ASEA-UNINET network apart from other privileges such as general tuition fees and handling fees.  It also helped to build closer academic relations between member institutions as they exchanged ideas in the areas of management and innovation, with the intention of helping shape a better future for their universities.
