Bringing the EU to UPM through EU Youth Outreach Program

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasise the importance of instilling and making aware of the goals at a young age, paving the way for more active youth participation in achieving the goals. The EU delegation's outreach programme in Malaysia is part of the EU's efforts to foster international cooperation and cultural exchange through education and research while providing the student with an awareness on the SDGs. The EUD, with the assistance of FGNC Event Management, has now begun an outreach programme targeting various schools and two (2) public institutions in Malaysia, with UPM being one of the two public universities picked.

 

On the 16th of March 2023, as part of the EUD outreach program for youth engagement in Malaysia, an outreach program under the EU @ Your Campus Program was held at the Dewan Besar, Pusat Kebudayaan Dan Kesenian Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Representing the EUD for the program was His Excellency (H.E) Mr Peter Van Acker, Belgian Ambassador to Malaysia, Ms Timea Magony, Political Officer from the delegation of European Union to Malaysia, and Ms Sharifah Nur Fatin, ERASMUS+ Alum and Speaker.

 

The program was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Industry and Community Relations, UPM, Prof. Ir. B.T. Hang Tuah Baharudin, Director for the Centre of Foundation Studies for Agricultural Science (ASPER), UPM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marina Mohd Top @ Mohd Tah, Head of PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA), Madam Noraihan Noordin, and 400 students from the Centre of Foundation Studies for Agricultural Science. The program begins with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Industry and Community Relations, UPM, Prof. Ir. B.T. Hang Tuah Baharudin. In his speech, he extended his appreciation to the EUD for the outreach initiative to bring more awareness to the youth on the various opportunities for them to pursue their higher education abroad, Prof. Ir. B.T. Hang Tuah also took this opportunity to share his experiences in studying abroad and urges the student to take the opportunity provided by various organization such as the ones offered by the European Union. The program resumes with a dialogue session with His Excellency (H.E) Mr Peter Van Acker who introduced the European Union and study landscape in Belgium and in Europe.

 

The programme covered a variety of topics, including an introduction to the European Union, the education environment in Europe, the various scholarship opportunities available to students, and an experience-sharing session from one of their Alum through the ERASMUS+ Program, which discussed some of the advantages of studying in Europe and the cultural experience of living abroad. The programme also included a Q&A session in which students were given the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the speakers, as well as joining the interactive quiz led by the FGNC Event Management team, which awarded five (5) outstanding quiz participants with a special gift from the European Union. The program concludes after the gift-giving ceremony to the VIPs and Speakers and resumes with a short luncheon session with the VIPs and the representative from the European Union.
