Celebrating Cross-Border Collaboration: Academia Sinica's Visit to UPM

Serdang, Malaysia - In a significant stride towards international academic cooperation, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) played host to a delegation from Academia Sinica on the 3rd of October, 2023. This meeting marked a continuation of their engagement, which initially began via an online platform earlier this year.

The delegation, led by Dr. Tzu-Ching Meng, Director of the Department of International Affairs, and Ms. Ren-Huei Huang, Senior Project Manager from the same department at Academia Sinica, arrived at UPM with a clear agenda for strengthening academic ties.

The UPM team comprised esteemed members, including Prof. Dr. Suhaimi Ab Rahman, currently executing the role of Director at PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA), Assoc Prof. Dr. Syazwani Idrus, Deputy Director of i-PUTRA, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Abdullah Muhammed, Deputy Dean for Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Normi Mohd Yahaya, an accomplished academician from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences. Also present were Madam Ida Suhaila Md Tahir, Section Head of Global Engagement, Madam Shahana Mohamad Yunus, Student Mobility Program Coordinator (Outbound), and Miss Nursyareiza Azali, Administrative Assistant/Coordinator for Inbound and Outbound Postgraduate Programs.

During the meeting, Academia Sinica introduced two promising initiatives to the UPM team: the Taiwan International Internship Program (TIIP) and the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP-X). TIIP, tailored for Bachelor and Master’s students, offers internships with scholarships, while TIGP-X caters specifically to PhD students, providing them with valuable research opportunities alongside financial support.

The discussions also delved into the prospect of organizing a recruitment program for the 2024 cohort of TIIP, specifically targeting UPM students. This potential collaboration signifies a commitment from both institutions to foster academic excellence and global exposure for their students.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing enthusiasm about the prospects of future collaborations. This engagement sets the stage for a mutually beneficial partnership that promises to open new avenues for academic growth and international exposure for students of both UPM and Academia Sinica.
