A Taste of Malaysia: Cultural Immersion Programme with Kagawa University

The arrival of eight mobility students from Kagawa University, accompanied by Mrs. Yuko Takigawa and Mr. Yasumitsu Kinoshita, was met with a warm welcome from the PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA) and members of the BUDDIES Association of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This reception marked the commencement of an enriching cross-cultural experience filled with learning, exploration, and meaningful connections.

The students had the opportunity to attend the prestigious ASEAN Universities Forum and Exhibition 2025 at Sunway Resort Hotel, where over 500 student leaders from 80 universities across the ASEAN region convened for insightful discussions on academia, research, and cultural exchange. This experience enabled the students to engage with future global leaders, exchange knowledge, and gain deeper insights into the higher education landscape of ASEAN.

Their cultural and educational journey continued the following day in Kuala Lumpur, beginning at the iconic Batu Caves. Here, the students ascended the renowned 272 steps to witness the towering limestone formations and vibrant Hindu shrines, providing them with a glimpse into Malaysia’s rich religious and cultural fabric. Subsequently, they visited the Muzium Bank Negara, where interactive exhibits introduced them to the nation’s financial history and economic evolution. At JICA Malaysia, the students participated in an engaging dialogue regarding Japan-Malaysia development cooperation, thereby strengthening their understanding of international partnerships and diplomatic ties.

Their exploration proceeded with a visit to KL Tower, where they enjoyed panoramic views of the bustling capital. The day concluded at Central Market, where the students had the opportunity to explore local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs, thereby adding a personal touch to their Malaysian experience.

Upon their return to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), the students immersed themselves in Malaysian traditions through hands-on cultural workshops. At the Faculty of Human Ecology, they learned to prepare Kuih Ketayap, a beloved local dessert made with pandan-flavoured crepes and a coconut palm sugar filling. This cooking session was followed by a Gamelan workshop, during which the students attempted to play this traditional Malay percussion ensemble. The practice of synchronised rhythms and movement fostered a deeper appreciation for Malaysia’s rich musical heritage.

The exploration continued with a visit to the Malaysian Cocoa Board, where the students were guided through the chocolate-making process, culminating in a delightful chocolate-tasting session that engaged their senses.

As their brief mobility programme drew to a close, a closing ceremony was held to commemorate their memorable journey. The Kagawa University students participated in a reflective sharing session, while Mrs. Yuko Takigawa presented a thoughtful proposal, and Mr. Yasumitsu Kinoshita offered heartfelt closing remarks. Each student received a certificate of participation, commemorating their time at UPM, and the event concluded on a high note with a lively performance of the Soran Bushi dance, a traditional Japanese folk dance that showcased their cultural pride and left a lasting impression on all in attendance.

On their final day, the students undertook a heritage tour, visiting Malaysia’s most iconic landmarks, including the majestic Putra Mosque in Putrajaya, the historic Sultan Abdul Samad Building, and Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square)—sites that represent Malaysia’s identity, resilience, and multicultural roots.

With warm farewells and cherished memories, the Kagawa University delegation bid adieu to the i-PUTRA team at KLIA, carrying with them not only souvenirs but also a renewed appreciation for cultural exchange, friendship, and the unique experiences they acquired during their time in Malaysia.
