OSAKA, 21 July 2025 — In a continued push to expand its global reach, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) formalised a strategic partnership with Ritsumeikan University (RU) through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed at the Malaysia Pavilion, Osaka Expo 2025, Japan.

Organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), the event brought together both public and private higher education institutions from Malaysia in a unified effort to promote the country’s higher education landscape to the world.

UPM was represented by its Vice Chancellor, Dato’ Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, accompanied by the Director of the PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA), Professor Dr. Alyani Ismail, and Deputy Director (Management), Mrs. Shahriah Membar. Representing Ritsumeikan University was Professor Dr. Mamoru Wakayama, Dean of the College of Life Sciences.

The agreement aims to deepen existing collaboration, particularly in the field of academia and research, led by UPM’s Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB).

“This partnership reflects the long-term commitment between UPM and RU, with i-PUTRA playing a key role in advancing the university’s internationalisation agenda,” said Professor Dr. Alyani.

UPM’s participation in Osaka Expo 2025 also featured a Pocket Talk session by Professor Dr. Samsilah Roslan, Director of Putra Science Park (PSP), titled “Supporting the Translation of R&D in Green Tech into Commercialised Products: How to Build a Conducive Ecosystem.” The session drew strong interest from international delegates, highlighting UPM’s capabilities in transforming research into high-impact products through an innovative ecosystem.

UPM’s involvement on the global stage underlines its continued commitment to expanding strategic international partnerships, strengthening research and innovation networks, and elevating Malaysia’s profile in global higher education.
