Strengthening Global Connections through Strategic Engagement and Leadership Development

In line with its commitment to advancing internationalisation and global cooperation, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), represented by the PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA), recently participated in two significant international programmes designed to build leadership capacity, foster strategic alliances, and strengthen professional networks across borders.

From 21 to 25 April 2025, the Institute of International Science, Technology & Innovation Centre (ISTIC) hosted a prestigious international leadership workshop in Mauritius, bringing together delegates from around the world. Representing UPM were Associate Professor Dr. Che Azurahanim Che Abdullah and Mr. Muhammad Azim Khairul Amir of i-PUTRA.

The five-day workshop was part of ISTIC’s strategic initiative to empower both current and emerging leaders with the tools and insights needed to address the complexities of modern global leadership. Through a series of interactive modules, participants explored key areas such as international diplomacy, resource management, strategic planning, and high-impact leadership. The workshop also offered a valuable opportunity to establish international networks and align institutional goals with broader global development priorities.

Just weeks later, from 7 to 10 May 2025, i-PUTRA further extended its international engagement at the 12th Annual Meeting of ASEAN+3 Heads of International Relations Offices, hosted by the Bandung Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Bandung, ITB) in collaboration with the ASEAN University Network (AUN).

Themed “Glorecal Connections: Driving Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Education Future in ASEAN+3 Countries,” the meeting brought together over 100 senior representatives from ASEAN countries, Japan, South Korea, and China. UPM was proudly represented by Professor Dr. Alyani Ismail, Director of i-PUTRA, and Mr. Muhammad Azim Khairul Amir, Head of Global Engagement Section.

The programme focused on harmonising global, regional, and local strategies to promote effective digital transformation in higher education. Participants exchanged best practices, discussed sustainable education models, and explored new ways to align institutional objectives with regional and global priorities. The meeting also featured keynote sessions by international education leaders, rotating workshops, site visits to ITB’s innovation hubs, and cultural exchanges that reinforced regional understanding and collaboration.

These back-to-back engagements reflect i-PUTRA’s proactive role in positioning UPM as a globally connected institution. By taking part in high-level dialogues and leadership development programmes, i-PUTRA continues to champion internationalisation, enhance institutional visibility, and contribute meaningfully to the future of sustainable and inclusive higher education.
