Malaysia’s National Park, Taman Negara, draws visitors into a sanctuary of greenery and grandeur, where walking under the sun-dappled leaves of the rainforest canopy, taking in the revitalising air in a sea of greenery, and gazing over the world from the summit of Peninsular Malaysia’s highest mountain immerses them in the breathtaking beauty of nature. This enchanting environment invites adventure and exploration, making it a perfect haven for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike.

As part of their cultural immersion experience, 13 mobility students, accompanied by three dedicated staff members from the PUTRA International Centre (i-PUTRA), explored the splendour of Malaysia’s 130 million year-old rainforest ecosystem during a three-day enriching expedition to Taman Negara from 23 to 25 May 2025.

Activities kicked off with a visit to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, a unique opportunity for students to observe rescued elephants up close, as well as feed and interact with the largest mammal in the rainforest. As the sun set, the students embarked on an exhilarating night walk in Taman Negara, discovering the nocturnal wildlife and the jungle’s vibrant nighttime ecosystem, including plants and insects of various species.

The excitement carried into the next morning with a two-hour hike up Teresek Hill. Reaching the summit, students were rewarded with a sweeping view of the ancient rainforest, leaving them feeling invigorated and in awe by the raw beauty of nature. After completing the climb, students made their way to an Orang Asli (the Indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia) village within Taman Negara, home to two Indigenous ethnic groups: the Batek and the Semokberi. Here, villagers demonstrated fire-making techniques using rattan, and students tried their hand at the sumpit, a bamboo blowpipe traditionally used for hunting.

With the final day underway, students cruised through lush greenery on a scenic boat ride to Lata Berkoh, a cascading stream with deep pools and strong, cold undercurrents. The journey continued downstream to the Kelah Sanctuary, where they fed freshwater fish before wading into the cool river for a refreshing swim—an energising close to their adventure.

Beyond learning first-hand about the diverse flora, fauna, and Indigenous culture of this heritage-rich rainforest, students found moments of healing and renewal as they reconnected with nature. This short escape not only deepened their appreciation for the environment but also strengthened the bonds they shared with one another.
