A New Degree in Life Experience Through AIMS Scholarship Programme

Getting a chance to be a part of AIMS program is like an opportunity that come once for life. This program is very beneficent and can help us as students to walk out from comfort zone. First of all, I went to Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta, Indonesia where one of the things that I gained which is managed to meet up with other students from other countries and learned about other cultures as well. It can help to improve ourselves in communication skills and be more open-minded when making decisions as we understand better about it. Besides, new environments really helped a lot in managing ourselves to adapt with it and be a flexible person. Plus, we can practice the good examples from other cultures to be implemented in our own life and spread it at our country. For example, when I was in Indonesia, I realize this country is low-power distance so our communication with the lecturers and administration officers were very smooth as they are helpful in making us felt comfortable and opened up for a discussion every time after lecture to hear our opinions. From this, we as students can build up a motivation to speak up and this will encouraged us to be braver to lead in this discussion.

Next, there is phrase ‘the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ that I can relate with this program when we participated in university programs where we mingle around with local and international citizens in discovering the world. For example, we joined International Office University Programs where we went to a village in Jogjakarta with all international and local students and learnt about Javanese cultures and explore nature there such as hiking in Gunung Kidul and learnt on how to make local foods such ‘dodol coklat’ and many things. From here, we can build up strong relationship and experienced something new that you will never get anywhere. It’s true that money cannot buy an experience, you must gained it yourselves. Therefore, I hope this programs will be continue and be more exposed to other students to learns something new in their degree life before it come to the end and I felt grateful to be offered and gained this opportunity.
