Outbound Mobility Programme Strengthens Academic and Cultural Exchange at UNPAK and IPB

Written by: Mohammad Shafiq bin Sudi

The outbound mobility programme to Universitas Pakuan (UNPAK) and Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) offered participating students a dynamic academic journey that combined classroom learning, industry engagement, and cross-cultural exchange. Over several days, the programme provided a meaningful platform for students to develop both academically and personally, enriching their understanding of entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable agricultural practices in the Indonesian context.

The programme began with a Dissemination Session at UNPAK, where students presented their academic work to an audience of lecturers and local peers. This platform allowed participants to hone their communication and public speaking skills while exchanging ideas in an inclusive and intellectually stimulating environment. The collaborative atmosphere encouraged open dialogue and critical thinking, setting the tone for the rest of the programme.

Participants also took part in a series of field visits to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), including SWEN Industry and other local businesses. These engagements, which featured coaching clinics and direct interaction with business founders, provided students with valuable insight into the entrepreneurial landscape of Indonesia. Observing product innovation and learning about the challenges faced by SME owners helped participants connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications, especially within the microbusiness ecosystem.

At IPB, the academic experience deepened through guided visits to several key facilities, including the Agro Techno Park (ATP), Smart Green House, Plant Factory Leuwikopo, and the IPB Museum. These visits were complemented by presentations and discussions on topics such as agricultural product innovation, digital business models, and strategies for sustainability in the agro-industry. The learning process was made more engaging with the use of interactive tools such as group presentations, quizzes via Kahoot, and educational games like "Leopardy," which brought energy and variety to the classroom sessions.

Beyond academic enrichment, the programme significantly enhanced soft skills among participants. Students were exposed to situations that strengthened their cross-cultural communication, teamwork, analytical thinking, and leadership. The collaborative nature of the activities helped foster a spirit of mutual respect and adaptability, essential for success in a globalised academic and professional landscape.

While the programme ran successfully according to plan, several recommendations were identified for future improvement. These include the need for all participants to maintain cleanliness and discipline throughout the programme, reflecting respect for the host institutions and the local environment. Assigning specific responsibilities to experienced committee members would also support better coordination and more efficient task management. In addition, stronger adherence to deadlines and clearer, more transparent communication between committee members and participants would further improve the overall experience and flow of activities. Ensuring every participant understands their role and is committed to fulfilling it would significantly enhance the programme’s operational success.

Overall, this outbound experience offered students an opportunity to step outside their academic comfort zones and immerse themselves in a new educational and cultural setting. It fostered the development of essential life skills, from public speaking and problem-solving to leadership and intercultural awareness. Exposure to different systems of knowledge and ways of thinking broadened their perspectives, preparing them to become well-rounded graduates capable of thriving in diverse international environments.

The networks built during the programme are expected to continue supporting students beyond their academic years, opening doors to future collaborations and career opportunities. In its entirety, the mobility programme not only bridged two nations through academic exchange but also cultivated a spirit of professionalism, integrity, and global-mindedness among all participants.
